Security Awareness for Humanitarian Staff

National staff is often lacking in training, yet they are most likely to be exposed to immediate danger. International staff depends highly upon national staff for their own safety.

You are ultimately responsible for your safety. Being aware that you are in an unsafe environment is the first step in decreasing your risk. That is, in a nutshell, what this training workshop is about. The workshop builds upon this self-awareness to further insight for the need and development of good policy, procedures and contingency plans.

Topics covered are: context, situational awareness (internal and external), risk reduction strategy (why and overlap), risk awareness, levels of responsibility, duty of care,

The practical modules are context-specific, while the theory is mixed with interesting exercises and videos throughout the day.


  • Pre-Travel, travel plan, and arrival
  • Context- and cultural awareness
  • Residence Safety: Burglary, Fire, Armed attack,
  • Driving & Transport safety: driving in hazardous environments, checkpoints, ambush, …
  • Traveling alone & Personal planning for an Emergency
  •  Abduction & Coping with capture
  • Communication
  • Explosive remnants of war (UXO)
  • Sexual harassment
  • Conflict and terrorism
  • Civil unrest

Course Information:

Duration: 1-3 days (8-24 hours). The length of the training, one, two or three days, is in consultation with your organization. Lead factor is the context, often determined by the security level of the organization or Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

location: On location. We offer our services at a location chosen by you.

Language: English, French, German, Dutch direct. Arabic, Russian, Spanish, Pashto: simultaneous interpreter.
